Desi Chilli Con-Carne

Ingredients:

  • 2 lb. ground beef (keema)

  • 1 onion chopped

  • 2 tbsp. heaped fresh garlic ginger paste

  • 1 to 1.5 cups of canned crushed tomatoes

  • 1 .5 cup water

  • Half cup cooking oil

  • 1.5 tsp red chili flakes

  • 1/2 tsp turmeric

  • 2 tsp cumin

  • 2 tsp coriander powder

  • 1 or 2 sticks cinnamon

  • 1.5 tsp salt (or to taste)

  • 2 black cardamom

  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

  • 1 tsp red chili powder

  • 1/2 tsp garam masala

  • 2 bay leaves

  • 6-8 cloves

  • 1-2 star anise

  • 2 cans of kidney beans

METHOD:

  1. In a pot, add all the above ingredients except the crushed tomatoes, oil, and kidney beans.

  2. Cover with lid and boil the ground beef till fully cooked and water is dry. This will take about 20 minutes.

  3. Now, add oil and tomatoes. Sauté it on high heat so the meat is nicely roasted and browned. Once fully brown, add the cans of kidney beans with the liquid.

  4. Mix well and bring to one boil then lower the heat on lowest point and let it slowly simmer for 30-40 minutes with lid on.

Turn off heat and add chopped cilantro. Serve hot!
